In thinking about Mr Borg's book on the Heart of Christianity, he presents a way to look at the bible in a Metaphor/historical context, as opposed to a literal approach. One way to see both the power and pit falls of this approach is too look at the power of great speeches and writing in our recent history. When President Bush spoke after 9-11, he did not just describe the events to us, but used language to give us the meaning of this event. The same is true with Lincoln's Gettysburg address or Martin Luther King's speech on the mall. These words move us, to support our country or to help in change. Much like Christ Words can move closer to God. Why- Because they are more than just a police report recording the facts. They carry a greater power. But, this power can also mislead, and we need only look to Hitler or Mao for examples. So, in looking at the bible through this lense, we take risks. But that is always true when we grow and learn.
